Electronic Dream Plant
Oxford, UK
Electronic Dream Plant was formed in 1977 by musician Adrian Wagner, great-great-grandson of composer Richard Wagner, and electronics engineer Chris Huggett amid the punk era's DIY spirit. The duo aimed to democratize synthesizers for working-class musicians through affordable, innovative designs like the Wasp, launched in 1978 for £199 with its distinctive black-and-yellow scheme, digital oscillators, analog filters, and touch-sensitive keyboard on a single PCB. This quirky hybrid synth, along with companions like the single-oscillator Gnat and Spider sequencer, empowered post-punk and synth-pop artists despite the company's brief run ending in bankruptcy around 1981.
