New England Digital

Norwich, Vermont, later White River Junction, Vermont

New England Digital Corporation was founded in 1976 in Norwich, Vermont, by a team including Sydney Alonso, Cameron Jones, and composer Jon Appleton, evolving from the Dartmouth Digital Synthesizer prototype developed at Dartmouth College. The company relocated to White River Junction, Vermont, and became renowned for the Synclavier, the first FM digital synthesizer and polyphonic system with 16-bit digital recording capabilities, later advancing into the Synclavier Digital Audio System known as the Tapeless Studio. Under leadership that expanded operations to offices in major cities, it unveiled the hit Synclavier II in 1980, but ceased operations in 1992 amid declining sales, with assets acquired by Fostex and others while former staff formed maintenance entities.
