Synclavier

The Synclavier story originated in 1976 at Dartmouth College in New Hampshire, where engineers Cameron Jones and Sydney Alonso, in collaboration with composer Jon Appleton, developed the pioneering digital audio system. Recognizing its commercial potential, they founded New England Digital to produce the Synclavier, the first computer-controlled digital synthesizer, which evolved from additive synthesis into a comprehensive recording studio platform with sampling, FM, and resynthesis capabilities. New England Digital ceased operations in 1993, but Jones acquired the intellectual property to continue support and release updates, including modern products like VST plugins, iOS apps, and desktop synthesizers under the Synclavier brand.
