DX9/7 is an alternative firmware ROM for the Yamaha DX9 that brings the synthesizer's features close to those of the DX7. It unlocks all six FM operators instead of the DX9's four, adds a pitch envelope generator and DX7-style operator keyboard scaling, and makes the DX9 respond to MIDI note velocity, so DX7 patches can be loaded over SysEx and played as intended. It is installed by programming the ROM image onto a 27128-series EPROM and fitting it in place of the DX9's original ROM chip, and the original chip can be put back at any time. Patches should be backed up first, because the synth's memory must be reinitialized after installing. The DX9's front panel cannot reach every DX7 parameter, internal patch memory remains smaller than the DX7's, and some DX7-specific SysEx functions used by patch editors are not supported.
