Opus 2 adds a modular plugin system to the original Teenage Engineering OP-1. Its core loads .opmod files from the instrument’s disk, letting owners add or remove synth engines, effects, performance tools and interface changes without rebuilding the firmware for every plugin. The starter pack includes DX7-style FM voice playback, Outatime and Dimension synths, a guitar amp, audio effects, scales and chords, and tape-editing tools. The mods menu shows installed plugins, their dependencies, memory use and processing load. Plugins are copied into the mods folder and loaded at startup; sounds retain their plugin identities so a missing plugin can be restored later. The browser patcher builds the core locally from the owner’s stock firmware file, and the project provides the starter pack and individual plugin downloads. This firmware supports the original OP-1 running stock firmware 246; OP-1 Field is excluded.

Hundekraft
firmwaregithub.com
Hundekraft expands the original Teenage Engineering OP-1 with selectable synth engines, drum synthesis, effects, sequencers and performance tools. Its browser workshop builds a personalised firmware from your unmodified R246 update file, then supplies a preset pack matched to the selected features. Sounds range from wavetable, granular and chip synthesis to thumb-piano tones and a virtual analog polysynth, with stutter, modulation and spacious reverb effects. The firmware supports 300 user synth presets. Chord mode, an editable C64-style arpeggiator and a four-track MIDI recorder add ways to develop patterns and automate sound controls. Four independent tapes, undo, loop editing and expanded sampler tools support arranging and recording. After the first installation through the OP-1 boot menu, the workshop can manage plugins and send reviewed updates over USB MIDI. This firmware supports the original OP-1 only; it does not run on the OP-1 Field.
OP1R
firmwaregithub.com
Browser patcher for the original OP-1: new synths, effects, a quad LFO, Euclidean sequencer, MIDI CC and scale mode.
Musica Obscura
firmwaregithub.com
Musica Obscura adds six sound and sequencing modules to the original Teenage Engineering OP-1 running op1r. Mixtur is a subharmonic organ whose frequency dividers create undertone chords and vocal formants. Arc models a singing electrical arc, moving from a sine tone to a buzzing oscillator with noise, coupled voices and unstable textures. The Palme effect adds sympathetic strings and gong-like resonances, while In a Room repeatedly filters a recorded loop through a modeled acoustic space. Oracle turns geomantic figures into a four-lane step pattern that can play melodies or drums. Peal rearranges held notes using change-ringing methods, with humanized timing and live calls that alter the sequence. The OP-1’s colored encoders control each module, with animated screens showing the sound or pattern in motion. Choose the modules in the op1r web patcher to include them in a custom firmware build; these modules target the original OP-1.
OP-1 MODS
firmwarejustinjoe.com
This is an unofficial firmware mod for the original OP-1. It adds a synth engine, a sequencer, six effects, an LFO, chords, scales, a Shift latch on the knob presses and MIDI CC control of almost every knob. It runs on the OP-1's own processor, on top of firmware 246. Your tape, sounds and albums are not touched by installing it.
SilverTape
firmwaresilvertape.error.nu
SilverTape is modified firmware for the original Teenage Engineering OP-1 that expands tape editing, the Finger sequencer and drum-sampler envelopes. The tape screen displays waveforms inside clips, and four encoder-linked waypoints let you jump to positions on the tape timeline. Finger adds sound preview, step editing, chords and individual note nudges for timing changes and strums. Each sampled drum key gains its own attack, decay, sustain and release envelope. The browser patcher builds a firmware file locally from your own unmodified stock R246 .op1 file; it does not install the result. SilverTape does not support OP-1 field and cannot be combined with other custom firmware. Tape waypoints disappear at restart, while drum envelopes save with their kits. Extra Finger chord notes and timing offsets save internally but are not included in normal DISK exports.
OP-1 Repacker
utilitygithub.com
The tool for unpacking and repacking OP-1 synthesizer firmware. It's based on the collective research we've done at the op-forums.com custom firmware thread. This allows you to access and modify the files within the firmware as well as repacking the files into a valid installable firmware file. Ready made mods are also included in the tool (see Modify). Lastly it is also possible to analyze unpacked firmware to get information such as build version, build time and date, bootloader version etc. Requires • Python3 • Tested on Linux, OS X and Windows 10
