Nanobox Tangerine Compact Multi-Sampling Instrument

MicroDigitalPolyphonic

$399

When 1010music released the Tangerine in 2023, they proved that a sampler doesn't need to be complicated to be powerful, and it definitely doesn't need to take up your entire desk. This pocket-sized powerhouse arrived as the latest addition to their colorful Nanobox family, and it's become a go-to choice for producers who want serious sampling capabilities without the learning curve or the footprint.

The Tangerine packs a 48kHz sample engine capable of 24 stereo polyphonic voices, with 64MB of internal memory for samples that fit in RAM or the ability to stream up to 8 larger stereo samples directly from a microSD card, each up to 4GB in size. You get eight configurable sample pads per preset that can function as single shots, multi-samples with up to 16 velocity layers, clips, slicers, or live recording destinations. The interface is refreshingly minimal: two knobs, four buttons, and a small touch screen that handles navigation and pad triggering without overwhelming you with menus. Recording is straightforward with stereo or mono options, threshold-based triggering, and the ability to create loops up to 4 hours long. Connectivity includes 3.5mm audio in and out, MIDI in and out on TRS jacks with Type A/B auto-sensing, USB-C power, a clock input for sync, and a microSD card slot. The built-in effects include reverb and delay, plus a full granular engine for creative sound design. It measures just 3.75 by 3 inches and weighs a quarter pound, making it genuinely portable.

The Tangerine has earned solid appreciation from the community for its intuitive workflow and the quality of its included sounds, particularly the 1.7GB sampled grand piano library. Some users note the 64MB internal memory can feel limiting if you want to load lots of samples into RAM, though the microSD streaming largely addresses this. It's become a favorite for live performers and producers working in compact setups, especially those who want to sample on the fly without tethering themselves to a computer.
