Akai MPC 500

DesktopDigitalPolyphonic

When Akai introduced the MPC500 in 2006, they solved a problem that had plagued beat makers for years: how to capture ideas anywhere without sacrificing the tactile, creative workflow that made the MPC legendary. This was the first truly portable MPC, small enough to fit in a backpack yet powerful enough to stand on its own as a complete production tool.

The MPC500 packs a 32-voice stereo sampler with 48-track MIDI sequencer into a chassis measuring just 266 x 175 x 44mm and weighing 1.34kg. You get 12 velocity and pressure-sensitive rubber pads for hands-on beat programming, 16MB of sample memory standard (expandable to 128MB), and 16-bit/44.1kHz sampling quality. The two-line LCD display is small but functional, and the control layout includes a Q-Link slider for real-time parameter tweaking, MIDI I/O, USB connectivity for drag-and-drop file transfer, and a built-in CompactFlash slot. Audio comes in via switchable line or mic-level inputs, with stereo outputs and a headphone jack. The unit runs on six AA batteries for roughly 4.5 hours or AC power, making it genuinely mobile.

The MPC500 has aged well in the hands of traveling producers and field recordists. Its compact pad layout and smaller footprint compared to larger MPC models actually feel natural rather than compromised, and the onboard effects suite—including reverb, delay, compression, and EQ—gives you enough sonic shaping to finish ideas on the road. The main limitation is the reduced screen real estate compared to studio-bound siblings, which can mean more menu diving, but that's the trade-off for something you can actually carry everywhere.
