MPC2000

DesktopDigitalPolyphonic

Back in 1997, this machine hit the scene as the affordable entry into Akai's legendary MPC family, packing pro-level sampling and sequencing power into a desktop box that felt like a game-changer for bedroom producers and pros alike.

At its core, it's a sample-based workstation with 2MB of memory standard—expandable to 32MB via 72-pin SIMMs—for 16-bit, 44.1kHz stereo or mono sampling, complete with editing tools like truncate, loop, pitch shift, and velocity crossfading. You get 32-voice polyphony, a 12dB/octave resonant lowpass filter and envelopes per voice, plus two LFOs for modulation, and optional effects via the EB16 board adding up to four processors like reverb and delay. The sequencer shines with 99 sequences on 64 tracks each, up to 100,000 events, groovy swing quantization, and song mode linking 20 songs; sequence external gear over dual MIDI outs while triggering via the 16 velocity- and pressure-sensitive pads across four banks. Physically, it's a sturdy 405 x 331 x 106mm grey slab weighing 5.5kg, with a crisp 248x64 LCD, floppy drive, balanced stereo inputs, stereo outs, headphone jack, and SCSI for drives—expandable further with optional eight individual outs and SMPTE sync.

Over the years, it's earned a devoted following for that tactile pad feel and intuitive workflow, with producers praising its swing and reliability in the studio; some note the lack of a transpose keyboard as a quirk, but the value and upgrade path keep it a staple in vintage setups.
