Rhythm Wolf

DesktopAnalogPolyphonic

Back in 2014, this beast emerged as Akai's nod to the golden era of analog rhythm boxes, blending raw drum hits with a snarling bass synth in a compact desktop form that's tough enough to survive gigging life.

At its core, it's a 5-voice analog setup delivering tunable kick, snare, metallic percussion, open and closed hi-hats, plus a subtractive bass module switching between square and saw waveshapes, all shaped by a resonant filter, envelope controls, and a signature Howl overdrive knob for gritty distortion. A 32-step sequencer with swing and velocity-sensitive MPC-style pads lets you program beats intuitively, across 16 patterns that save permanently to internal memory—no power loss worries. Connectivity shines with USB-MIDI, DIN MIDI in/out, and gate I/O for DAW triggering or hardware syncing, while the sturdy 315 x 221 x 51 mm metal chassis weighs in at 2 kg, with dedicated stereo outs, headphone jack, and tricolour LEDs lighting up the step grid.

Over the years, players have praised its punchy, characterful analog tones—evoking early hip-hop and electro vibes—and the hands-on workflow for quick jams, though some note the drum tuning range feels limited, especially on kick, pushing creative workarounds in mixes.
