Back in 1993, this rackmount legend arrived as Akai's fully loaded evolution of their S3000 series, packing most of the sought-after expansions right out of the box—like built-in filters, SCSI, and digital I/O—that made it a studio staple for pros chopping breaks and crafting beats.

At its core, it's a 16-bit stereo digital sampler with 32 voices of polyphony, 32MB of expandable RAM via standard SIMMs, and pristine 44.1kHz sampling backed by 28-bit internal processing and 18-bit D-A conversion with oversampling. The front panel centers around a large backlit LCD with soft keys, cursor controls, a data wheel, numeric keypad, and eight mode buttons for quick jumps between sampling, multi-timbral setups, and disk ops; it measures a compact 483 x 432 x 88mm at 7.1kg, with 1 stereo audio in, 8 individual outs (4 stereo pairs), S/PDIF digital I/O, MIDI in/out/thru, SCSI for drives, and floppy/hard disk recording. Synth-like perks shine through with resonant filters, dual envelopes and LFOs per voice, plus 50 onboard effects like delay, chorus, reverb, and pitch shift—or go further with the optional EB-16 board for multi-channel processing including distortion, EQ, and ring mod.
