RackmountDigitalPolyphonic

Back in 1985, this 2U rackmount sampler marked one of Akai's earliest forays into pro-level digital sampling, delivering 12-bit grit that Future Sound of London tapped for their first sonic experiments.

At its core, it packs 6-voice polyphony with 128KB of RAM for up to 8 seconds of samples at 4kHz, scalable to 32kHz rates via selectable options from 4-32kHz. Front-panel sliders let you tweak start/end points, loop tuning with ping-pong mode, and overdub layers, while a variable low-pass filter cuts aliasing, decay shapes releases, and an LFO adds rate/depth/delay vibrato for animated edges. MIDI In/Out/Thru handles multi-channel control (up to 9 plus Omni), with mono mic/line input, front/rear mono outputs, and a trigger jack for manual or auto sampling— all housed in a sturdy 483 x 300 x 88mm black chassis weighing 6.5kg, needing an optional Quick Disk drive for saves.

Vintage enthusiasts prize its lo-fi warmth and straightforward workflow for bass, drums, and glitchy effects, though the limited memory and disk dependency draw nods to its era's constraints—still a charming backup for MIDI rigs chasing that authentic '80s sampler vibe.
