Alesis QSR

DigitalPolyphonic

Back in 1996, this rackmount module packed 16MB of sample ROM into a single-space chassis, delivering the same powerhouse synthesis engine from Alesis' QS7 and QS8 keyboards without the bulk of keys or sliders.

At its core, it's a digital rompler with 64-voice polyphony and 16-part multitimbrality, using up to four layered sounds per program drawn from 649 high-quality 48kHz samples—including stellar stereo grand pianos, lush strings, punchy drums, and versatile synth textures. Programs route through low-pass filters, a deep QS Modulation Matrix with 12 LFOs and envelope generators for dynamic control, then hit the QuadraVerb 2-inspired effects with four independent buses offering reverb, delay, chorus, distortion, rotary sim, and EQ. Hands-on editing comes via a bright backlit display, data wheel, dedicated buttons, and four programmable global controllers, plus MIDI In/Out/Thru, four stereo analog outs, ADAT optical digital I/O, headphone jack, and two PCMCIA slots for doubling ROM to 32MB or loading sequences. Compact at 19 x 1.75 x 6 inches and just 4.5 lbs, it powered by a simple 9VAC adapter.

Players still hunt these down for their clean, rich bread-and-butter sounds that hold up in modern mixes, though some note the filters lack resonance for aggressive leads. It's a studio workhorse that rewards tweaking.
