HR-16

DesktopDigitalPolyphonic

When Alesis released the HR-16 in 1987, they proved that a budget drum machine didn't have to sound cheap or feel limited. Built around 16-bit PCM samples recorded at 47kHz, this machine packed 49 drum and percussion sounds into a compact desktop unit that became a workhorse for bedroom producers and touring musicians alike.

The HR-16 runs on a straightforward digital architecture with 16 voices of polyphony, meaning you can layer up to 16 different drum sounds simultaneously within a single pattern. The interface centers around 16 touch-sensitive pads that respond to velocity, paired with a small display and data entry controls that let you assign any of the 49 sounds to each pad, adjust pitch in semitone increments, set individual volume levels, and control stereo panning across two separate output pairs. Patterns can stretch from 1 to 682 beats, and you can program them either in real-time or step-time, with the step editor showing sub-beat resolution down to 96ths of a beat for precise hi-hat placement. The machine includes 100 pattern and 100 song slots, MIDI In and Out for integration with external gear, and even a cassette tape interface for backing up your work the old-fashioned way.

The community consensus has remained consistent over the decades: the HR-16 sounds genuinely musical and remains one of the most intuitive drum machines ever made, with a sound library that holds up remarkably well. The main criticism centers on the rubber buttons, which tend to stick and misfire with age, though replacement button kits are available. Some users note the samples have a distinctly 80s character, which is either a feature or a limitation depending on what you're making. For the price it commands on the used market, it remains a compelling entry point into hardware drum programming or a capable secondary machine for modern setups.
