When Ashun Sound Machines launched the Hydrasynth in 2019, they set out to solve a problem that had nagged at modern synthesizer design for years: how do you make a digital instrument feel as expressive and responsive as the classic polysynths of the 1970s and 80s? Their answer was to build polyphonic aftertouch into the DNA of the instrument, giving every single key its own pressure sensitivity—something that even many high-end vintage synths couldn't claim.
The Hydrasynth is an eight-voice digital synthesizer built around three wavetable oscillators, two of which can perform waveform scanning for evolving, morphing tones. The real magic happens in the mutators: dual wave processors that let you layer sounds through FM synthesis, create detuned copies via Wavestack, or trigger hard sync for classic aggressive textures. Two filters—each with 11 different models ranging from Moog ladder emulations to MS-20 impressions and even a vowel filter for robotic vocalization—can be routed in series or parallel depending on what you're chasing. Five LFOs with step sequencing modes, five complex envelopes, and a 32-slot modulation matrix give you the depth to program everything from straightforward subtractive patches to generative soundscapes that evolve on their own.
The keyboard itself is built for performance. The 49-key Polytouch keybed responds to the nuance of your playing, and you can customize how it responds to pressure, fade, and onset to match your technique. A large ribbon controller adds another dimension of real-time expression, while CV and gate connectivity opens the door to modular integration. The arpeggiator includes randomness and ratcheting, and the effects section covers the essentials—delay, reverb, chorus, flanger, rotary, phaser, lo-fi, tremolo, EQ, distortion, and compression. It ships with 256 factory patches across five banks, all designed by respected patch programmers.
Since its release, the Hydrasynth has earned respect in the community as a serious sound design tool that doesn't sacrifice playability.
