2-XM Duophonic Analog Synthesizer

AnalogDuophonic

Behringer's take on the legendary Oberheim SEM architecture arrives as a surprisingly compact desktop synth that proves you don't need vintage prices or massive footprint to access that creamy, warm analog character that defined 1970s polyphonic synthesis.

The 2-XM packs two complete voice modules, each with its own variable-shape oscillator featuring pulse width modulation and hard sync capabilities. A dedicated mixer section for each voice includes a noise generator and two external audio inputs, letting you process external sources through the synth's signal path. The heart of the sound is the state variable filter design that can morph between low pass, high pass, notch, and band pass modes—smooth and musical without the harshness you sometimes get from other filter designs. Two LFOs and four envelope generators (two per voice) provide extensive modulation options, while a two-channel mixer with level and pan controls lets you create stereo soundscapes by spreading the voices across the stereo field. You can switch between unison mode, which stacks all four oscillators for massive monophonic leads, split mode for keyboard splitting, or duophonic mode for true two-voice polyphony. Portamento works independently on each voice for expressive pitch sliding.

Since its release in early 2025, the 2-XM has earned genuine appreciation from the community for delivering that Oberheim vibe at an accessible price point. Reviewers consistently praise the filter character as juicy and wet, with a smooth resonance that sits somewhere between the vintage originals and modern interpretations. The compact 80HP Eurorack-compatible footprint makes it equally at home on a desktop or integrated into a larger modular setup, and the Poly Chain feature lets you combine multiple units for expanded polyphony. Some early users noted tuning sensitivity, though Behringer addressed this with calibration guidance. The small knobs are a minor ergonomic consideration, but they're solid and smooth in operation.
