Syncussion SY-1

EurorackAnalogDuophonic

Pearl's Syncussion SY-1 was a revelation when it landed in the late 1970s—a compact drum synthesizer that proved you didn't need a room full of gear to create wild, expressive percussion sounds. Behringer's recreation brings that same analog magic into the modern era, making a genuinely rare piece of synthesis history available without the collector's price tag or the hunt through vintage markets.

This is a two-voice analog drum synth built around two voltage-controlled oscillators, each with access to six distinct oscillator modes: single oscillator, frequency modulation, dual oscillator mix, dynamic oscillator mix, FM with noise, and pure noise. That flexibility means you can dial in everything from tight, punchy kicks and crisp snares to shimmering cymbals and weird sci-fi textures. Each voice has its own tune, decay, and filter cutoff controls, giving you real-time sculpting power without menu diving. The pitch sweep function adds drama with adjustable speed, range, and bidirectional control—perfect for those classic analog dive-bomb effects. A pair of LFOs with square and triangle waveforms handle modulation duties, while sample-and-hold adds unpredictable character by randomizing pitch between hits.

The unit ships as an 80HP Eurorack module but also works as a standalone desktop synth, so you're not locked into any particular format. It's got solid connectivity: trigger inputs for each voice with adjustable sensitivity, individual audio outputs on both 1/4-inch and 3.5mm jacks, plus MIDI in and thru via 5-pin DIN and USB. The Synthtribe desktop app lets you edit and store patches, which is handy for recalling your favorite settings. Since its release in 2024, the SY-1 has found genuine appreciation among techno producers and Eurorack enthusiasts who value its straightforward, hands-on approach to percussion synthesis—no menus, no screens, just knobs and immediate sonic gratification.
