Black Corporation's ISE-NIN represents something rare in the synth world: a modern instrument that honors the sonic character of the legendary Roland Jupiter-8 without simply copying it. Released in 2023, this eight-voice analog synthesizer has become a go-to choice for musicians seeking that warm, creamy Japanese-style analog sound with genuinely modern control and expandability.

The ISE-NIN packs two voltage-controlled oscillators per voice, each capable of producing triangle, ramp, square, and adjustable pulse waves across a 10 Hz to 12.5 kHz range. Every oscillator supports pulse width modulation, hard sync, and cross-modulation for complex timbral sculpting. The filter section features dual multimode filters—a non-resonant highpass and a resonant lowpass with switchable 12dB or 24dB per octave slopes—both designed to the original AS3109 specification but built with 1% metal resistors and precision capacitors for tighter, more consistent voice-to-voice performance. Two ADSR envelope generators, dual LFOs with four waveforms each, and a dedicated noise generator round out the modulation toolkit. The front panel is dominated by sliders with that distinctive orange labeling that channels 1980s aesthetic, while an OLED display and USB port provide modern workflow conveniences.

What truly sets the ISE-NIN apart is its depth beyond the hardware. Full MPE support means pairing it with compatible controllers unlocks per-note pitch bend, expression, and polyphonic aftertouch. You can layer or split two presets simultaneously, and the 1280 total preset memories across ten banks—plus support for Scala and MTS-ESP microtuning standards—make it genuinely versatile for experimental and microtonal work. The desktop format measures 483 x 178mm and occupies 4U of rack space, making it compact enough for a studio shelf while remaining fully rackmountable. Since launch, the ISE-NIN has earned respect from the community for delivering authentic analog character without the compromises of purely digital emulation, though some users have noted that Black Corporation's decision to withhold schematics limits deep customization options.
