Dave Smith Instruments Poly Evolver Rack

RackmountHybridPolyphonic

When Dave Smith released the original Evolver in 2002, it proved that you could pack serious sonic firepower into a compact package. The Poly Evolver Rack took that concept and multiplied it by four, stacking four complete Evolvers into a single 1U rackmount unit that became an instant classic for anyone wanting polyphonic depth without sacrificing the raw, characterful sound that made the Evolver legendary.

This is a true analog-digital hybrid where each of the four voices gets its own complete synthesis engine: two analog oscillators delivering classic waveforms like sawtooth, triangle, and pulse with voltage-controlled pulse-width modulation, plus two digital wavetable oscillators loaded with 96 waveforms from the legendary Prophet VS. You get hard sync on the analog side, FM and ring modulation on the digital side, and a dual-filter design per voice with Curtis analog low-pass filters (switchable between four-pole and two-pole) paired with digital high-pass filters. The real magic happens in the modulation section: 16 LFOs total across the four voices, three separate envelopes per voice, and a comprehensive mod matrix that lets you route modulation anywhere. Each voice has its own 16-step by 4-parameter sequencer that syncs to MIDI, plus onboard effects including three independent syncable delay lines, distortion, feedback loops with "grunge," and a bit-crushing "hack" effect. The control layout is straightforward with 78 knobs and 58 switches giving you direct access to parameters without menu diving.

The Poly Evolver Rack became a studio and live staple because of its flexibility and character. You can run it as a true four-voice polysynth, split it into four independent monosynths each with their own sequence, or layer voices for massive unison textures. Each voice has dedicated stereo outputs plus a master mix, and there's stereo audio input for external processing chains. The community has consistently praised its sonic aggression, the tight integration of sequencer and effects, and the way it handles both lush pads and industrial textures with equal conviction. Some users note the learning curve on the mod matrix, but once you're in, the depth rewards exploration.
