E-mu Carnaval

DesktopDigitalPolyphonic

Back in 1997, this rackmount gem arrived as E-mu's playful nod to Latin rhythms, packing 8MB of authentic samples captured at 39kHz/16-bit for everything from sizzling salsa congas to soaring mariachi trumpets and tejano accordions.

It's a 32-voice polyphonic, 16-part multitimbral module with 297 raw instruments shaped by 17 Z-plane multimode filters—those signature 6-pole resonant beasts—and dual envelopes plus two MIDI-syncable LFOs feeding a flexible mod matrix. Controls are simple and hands-on: a backlit 2x16 LCD, cursor buttons, stepped data wheel, and master volume knob on its red-finished 1U chassis (about 4.5 x 19 x 8.5 inches, 6.8 lbs). Six 1/4-inch analog outs give three stereo pairs for flexible mixing, full DIN MIDI I/O handles 16 channels, and built-in sequencing shines with 640 presets (384 ROM/256 RAM), 100 beat patterns, and 28 song slots optimized for percussion kits—many tuned for E-mu/Kat controllers.

Vintage hunters love its punchy, genre-specific vibe that still holds up in modern setups, though some note the lack of onboard effects and slightly clunky menu navigation as classic trade-offs of the era.
