E-mu Orbit 9090

RackmountDigitalPolyphonic

Dropped in 1996 as E-mu's first dedicated dance module, this rackmount rompler packed 8MB of ROM samples tailored for the exploding techno, house, and jungle scenes, capturing vintage analog vibes alongside era-defining stabs and grooves.

It's a 1U powerhouse with 32-voice polyphony across 16-part multitimbrality, running on a Motorola 68000 CPU and dishing out 39 kHz/16-bit PCM waveforms through Z-plane multimode filters, dual envelopes, and two LFOs—all routed via a flexible modulation matrix. A 16x2 LCD handles editing, with 512 onboard patches (256 presets, 256 users), three stereo output pairs for submixes, and full MIDI In/Out/Thru plus support for alternate tunings. At 15 kg and built like a tank in yellow metal, it layers beautifully in MIDI chains for that authentic 90s punch.

Owners still geek out over its iconic basslines and Detroit techno textures, calling it a layering legend despite the dated screen and MIDI quirks—pure gold for retro heads chasing unfiltered dance magic.
