E-mu Planet Phatt

RackmountDigitalPolyphonic

Launched in 1997 as E-mu's bold nod to the rising phat bass and groove-heavy sounds of hip-hop and trip-hop, this purple rackmount module packed over 470 waveforms sampled at 16-bit/39kHz into a compact 1U chassis that became a secret weapon for producers chasing authentic urban vibes.

At its core, it's a 32-voice polyphonic, 16-part multitimbral beast using digital PCM sample playback with two layers per patch—Primary and Secondary Instruments—that route through a low-pass tone control, the signature Z-Plane multimode filter (low-pass, high-pass, band-pass, plus vocal formant and phaser sweeps), and a stereo DCA. Shaping comes from two AHDSR envelopes, a DADHSR aux envelope, dual LFOs (MIDI-syncable), and versatile function generators for modulation depth on pitch, filter, crossfades, and more, all tweakable via front-panel knobs or MIDI. The standout Beats mode turns it into a drum machine with 100 editable loops (MIDI sequences, not audio samples) that sync to clock and morph via the X-Factor transpose for endless groove variations, backed by 640 patches, 100 beats, and 28 songs in internal memory. I/O shines with 6 configurable quarter-inch outputs (3 stereo pairs or 6 submixes), stereo effects returns, and full DIN MIDI In/Out/Thru for seamless sequencer integration.

Owners still geek out over its thumping 808s, Moog-esque leads, and how the analog-feel controls deliver huge sound from such a small box—it's a staple in hip-hop setups, though some note the lack of onboard effects as a trade-off for that pure, processable output. If you're hunting vintage rack gear, this one's a time capsule of late-90s beatmaking gold.
