E-mu Proteus 1000

RackmountDigitalPolyphonic

Launched in 2002 to celebrate E-mu's 30th anniversary, this rackmount module distilled the legendary Proteus sound palette into an affordable powerhouse, packing the same pristine 32MB Composer ROM as its bigger siblings but in a more compact form.

At its core, it's a sample-based digital synth with 64-voice polyphony and 16-part multitimbrality, drawing from 1173 instruments across 1536 presets—1024 factory-loaded in ROM and 512 user slots in RAM. Each of its four layers per preset routes through 50 Z-plane filters, three envelopes (filter, amp, and assignable), and two multi-waveform LFOs, all tied into a deep mod matrix with 64 sources and destinations for expressive sound design. Four realtime knobs give hands-on control over 12 parameters, while the 24-bit dual stereo effects engine delivers from its 29 reverbs, 15 delays, and more. Physical perks include a 1U black rack chassis, standard MIDI In/Out/Thru, two analog stereo outs, two SIMM sockets for extra 32MB ROM expansion, and the intuitive SoundNavigator for preset browsing.

Over two decades on, players cherish its tight MIDI response, versatile general-purpose sounds from acoustic pianos to synth sweeps, and expandability with Proteus ROMs—though some note the single stereo pair and lack of digital out as trade-offs for the price point back then.
