E-mu Vintage Pro

RackmountDigitalPolyphonic

Back in 2002, this rackmount module arrived as a loving tribute to the golden age of keyboards, packing the souls of '60s ARPs, '70s Hammonds, and '80s FM synths into a compact digital powerhouse that still turns heads in studios today.

Built on the legendary Proteus 2000 engine, it delivers 128-voice polyphony across 32 MIDI channels, with 32MB of 44.1kHz/16-bit sample ROM—expandable to 128MB via four internal SIMM slots—and 1536 presets (1024 ROM, 512 user editable). Shape sounds using 50 Z-plane multimode filters, 17 LFOs with clever variation for that authentic vintage drift, and over 100 per-preset parameters, all tweakable via front-panel real-time knobs and a bright LED display. A dual stereo effects processor offers 29 reverbs, 15 delays, and more, while six balanced analog outs, S/PDIF digital, and full MIDI In/Out/Thru keep it versatile in any rig; at just 1U (19x8.5x1.75 inches, 3.1kg), it slips easily into racks drawing a mere 15 watts.

Over two decades on, players cherish its warm, playable emulations that nail classic tones without the maintenance hassles, though some note the editing workflow feels dated compared to modern software—still, it's a go-to for producers chasing that irreplaceable retro vibe.
