E-mu Xtreme Lead-1

RackmountDigitalPolyphonic

Launched in 2000 as E-mu's ultimate dancefloor weapon, the Xtreme Lead-1 packed the raw energy of the Audity 2000 sample set into a compact rackmount module, delivering techno basses, buzzing leads, and synced grooves that powered tracks from artists like BT and The Crystal Method.

This 64-voice polyphonic beast runs on a 32MB X-LEAD ROM with 1210 waveforms at 44.1kHz/16-bit, expandable via two SIMM slots or a Turbo upgrade for up to three ROM banks and Proteus libraries. It shines with 50 Z-plane multimode filters for razor-sharp sound sculpting, a modular PatchCord mod matrix for wild routing, and 16 programmable arpeggiators plus innovative SuperBEATS mode to trigger and latch BPM-synced loops across independent rhythm tracks from your keyboard. Hands-on control comes via a front-panel LCD, nine buttons, and four real-time knobs that tweak filter cutoff, resonance, envelope shapes, and more, with deep edit modes for precise data entry. Dual 24-bit stereo effects processors handle reverb, delay, and beyond, routing through just two 1/4-inch stereo outs (expandable with Turbo), all connected via standard MIDI In/Out/Thru.

Users loved its intuitive navigation and live performance punch for electronic genres, though some noted programming could feel deep for quick tweaks. Even discontinued, it remains a vintage gem for producers chasing that early-2000s club vibe.
