Proteus 1 Sound Module (Pop Rock)

RackmountDigitalPolyphonic

Back in 1989, this little 1U rackmount module kicked off E-MU's hugely successful run of affordable sound modules, pulling killer pop and rock samples straight from their Emulator III library to pack 4MB of ROM with pianos, organs, strings, horns, guitars, basses, drums, and Latin percussion.

It's a straightforward 32-voice polyphonic ROMpler running at 39kHz 16-bit, with 192 presets—128 ROM and 64 editable in RAM—across 125 instruments, all fully tweakable via a simple 16x2 LCD and front-panel buttons for key range, volume, pan, tuning, chorus, delay up to 13 seconds, and sample start/reverse. Modulation shines with up to six keyboard/velocity patches and eight realtime ones drawing from one LFO, an aux envelope, pitch bend, aftertouch, and four assignable MIDI controllers, plus three footswitch inputs. The back offers full MIDI In/Out/Thru, four submix inputs, and six balanced 1/4" outputs in three stereo pairs, all powered internally with auto-switching 110/220V—no external brick needed. At just 2kg and built light with plastic construction, it's a breeze to slot into any rig.

Players loved its reliable polyphony and multitimbral punch for layering contemporary tracks, offloading basic sounds from bigger synths, though some noted the lack of onboard effects or filters keeps it pure sample playback. Demand was so high back then, E-MU could barely keep up.
