Analog Rytm MKI

Drum MachineHybrid

When Elektron released the Analog Rytm in 2014, they set out to prove that a drum machine could be just as deep and expressive as any synthesizer, and the result was something that still holds up as one of the most thoughtfully designed percussion instruments ever made. The core idea was simple but ambitious: eight voices of pure analog drum synthesis paired with sample playback, all controlled by one of the most sophisticated sequencers in the business.

The machine gives you eight dedicated analog drum voices, each with its own fully analog signal path including a specialized percussion sound generator, analog overdrive, a 2-pole multimode filter, and separate filter and amp envelopes. You also get a sample playback engine on each voice, so you can layer analog grit with your own samples or classic drum breaks. The sequencer is where things get really interesting: twelve drum tracks plus an effects track, up to 64 steps per pattern, with per-track length and scale settings, parameter locks, swing, micro timing, trig conditions, and an assignable retrig function for creating rolls and polyrhythmic patterns. The twelve large, velocity and pressure-sensitive pads let you trigger sounds in real time or use them as performance macros, while the step sequencer handles the detailed work. Effects include digital delay and reverb on individual tracks, plus a master bus with analog stereo distortion and compression.

The Analog Rytm has earned genuine respect in the community for its sound quality and workflow flexibility. Some users note that the eight-voice architecture means certain drum elements share voice resources through choke groups, which can feel limiting if you're trying to run a lot of simultaneous sounds, but this constraint also forces creative thinking about your drum design. The build quality is solid, with backlit buttons rated for 50 million presses and a crisp OLED display that works great in dark venues. Individual audio outputs for each voice give you serious mixing and processing options in the studio, while USB and MIDI connectivity keep it modern and compatible with any setup.
