Launched in 2001, this drum machine pioneered parameter locks, letting you twist knobs per step for beats that evolve wildly without ever sounding static.

At its heart are four distinct MD-synths—TRX emulating Roland TR-series punch, EFM for crispy FM percussion, E12 playback from SP1200 and Simmons samples, and PI for organic textures—across 39 tweakable machines on 16 polyphonic tracks. Hands-on editing shines through eight real-time knobs, a mod matrix with 16 tempo-synced dual-waveform LFOs, and per-track effects like amplitude modulation, 1-band EQ, resonant 24dB multimode filter, sample-rate reduction, and distortion. The sequencer holds 128 patterns up to 32 steps, 64 kits, 32 songs, with swing, slide, accent, and those game-changing 16x24 parameter locks per step for micro-evolution. Master effects include rhythm echo delay, Gatebox reverb, hi/lo-shelf parametric EQ, and Dynamix compressor, all feeding six impedance-balanced outs (stereo main plus four assignable), dual unbalanced inputs, headphone jack, MIDI I/O/T and USB. Compact at 340x181x63mm and 2.8kg, with a 128x64 backlit LCD and intuitive buttons for pattern banks, transport, and deep menu diving.

Over two decades, it's earned a cult following among electronic producers for its raw, characterful sounds and sequencer depth that still crushes in modern setups—though some note the original UI feels dense compared to today's touchscreens.
