Invisible hum becomes playable sound with Demon Box, a desktop portal into the electromagnetic world that’s already buzzing all around you. Instead of relying on traditional oscillators or filters, it listens to the EMF signatures of phones, laptops, motors, magnets, even tuning forks and turns them into rich audio, MIDI, and control voltage signals you can shape in real time.
At its core, Eternal Research’s triangular instrument houses 33 surface inductors arranged into three overlapping channels, each with its own inductor gain, external audio gain, and balance control for blending EMF and line-level sources. Three mono audio inputs feed a custom hybrid engine—one input offering audio-to-MIDI conversion—while three mono outputs plus a summed triphonic output deliver an expanded, beyond-stereo soundfield. Each channel also provides a dedicated CV output in a ±5V range and generates note and CC data over both 5-pin DIN and USB-C MIDI, letting Demon Box double as an expressive controller for synths, modular systems, visuals, and more.
Powered over USB-C, this hybrid instrument/controller sits comfortably on any desktop, acting as a self-contained EMF listener, an experimental drone and noise source, or a nerve center for audiovisual performance. Whether you’re coaxing fragile textures from a smartphone’s circuitry or driving triphonic atmospheres from a room full of electronics, Demon Box reframes everyday devices as an endlessly variable orchestra waiting to be discovered.
