Kawai KC20

KeyboardDigitalPolyphonic

When Kawai released the KC20 in 1993, they were solving a real problem: musicians wanted a full-sized keyboard that didn't require a truck to move it. At just 4.1 kilograms with a 20-centimeter depth, this 61-key synthesizer proved you didn't have to sacrifice playability for portability.

The KC20 is built around a General MIDI-compatible sound engine with 160 tones and seven drum kits, all processed through an 18-bit digital-to-analog converter for clean reproduction. It offers 20-voice polyphony in its standard mode, though the Compose mode can allocate up to 28 voices across 16 independent sections for sequencing work. The synth features velocity-sensitive keys and a straightforward control layout with pitch and modulation wheels on the left, a volume slider across the top, and a 16-character LCD display for navigating settings. You get 64 user-editable patches plus 16 ROM presets, reverb effects with adjustable time and depth, and full MIDI in/out/thru connectivity for integration with computers and other gear.

The KC20 found its audience among musicians who needed a dependable, lightweight sound module and MIDI controller that could handle both live performance and studio sequencing. It never claimed to be cutting-edge sonically, but reviewers consistently praised its portability, the quality of its string sounds, and its direct PC interface. The drum kits responded well to reverb, and the bass patches were genuinely usable. For anyone working in the mid-90s who needed something that fit in a gig bag without compromise, the KC20 delivered exactly what it promised.
