Kawai XD-5

RackmountDigitalPolyphonic

Back in 1989, this rackmount gem arrived as Kawai's dedicated percussion powerhouse, built on the same DMS digital multi-spectrum engine as their K4 series but tuned specifically for killer drums with lightning-fast envelopes and gate modes.

Layer up to four of its 256 high-quality 16-bit PCM waveforms—215 samples plus 41 synthesized ones—per voice across 16-voice polyphony, then sculpt them with a resonant lowpass digital filter, dedicated DIADSR envelopes for each osc, dual LFOs, and clever touches like auto-bend for realistic tom pitch shifts. The 2U panel packs 31 dedicated buttons, dual sliders for volume and value, a backlit LCD, and a headphone jack up front, while the back offers stereo outs plus six individual 1/4" jacks, full MIDI I-O-T, and external card storage for 64 patches and 16 kits. At just 2.8kg and super compact, it's a studio multitool with poly aftertouch response and velocity curves for nuanced control.

Players have long praised its flexibility for techno, electro, and industrial beats—far beyond basic ROMplers—though some note the lack of trigger inputs means it's best for MIDI sequencing rather than pad-bashing.
