Kenton Electronics Pro-Kadi

DesktopDigital

Back in the 1980s and 90s, when drum machines and vintage monosynths ruled the studio, Kenton Electronics created a bridge between the MIDI revolution and all that beautiful analog gear that refused to speak the new language. The Pro-Kadi was their answer for musicians who wanted to trigger classic drum machines like the Roland TR-808 and TR-606 directly from MIDI controllers, keyboards, or sequencers, while also handling the quirky control protocols of synths like the EDP Wasp and Gnat.

The Pro-Kadi is a compact MIDI-to-control interface that converts MIDI data into the specific trigger and control signals these machines understand. It features dedicated ports for both Wasp mode (controlling the Wasp and Gnat synthesizers) and Kadi mode (for drum machines with a Kenton socket kit), with an adjustable accent threshold for the drum machine side. The unit stores all your settings in non-volatile memory, so your configurations survive a power cycle. It's straightforward to operate once you understand which mode you're working in, making it an elegant solution for integrating older gear into MIDI-based setups without needing multiple adapters or workarounds.

The Pro-Kadi found its place in studios where vintage gear mattered and MIDI compatibility was essential but not always available. Musicians appreciated its focused approach to solving a specific problem rather than trying to be everything to everyone. It's become a sought-after piece on the used market precisely because it does one job well and because the TR-808 and TR-606 have only grown more desirable over time.
