KeyFax Phat-Boy

DesktopDigital

Back in 1998, this compact powerhouse brought instant hands-on control to the era's MIDI synths, letting producers like Fatboy Slim twist knobs for real-time tweaks that sequencers could capture perfectly.

Slightly larger than a VHS tape with its bold yellow and black finish, it packs 13 multi-function rotary knobs plus a dedicated MIDI channel selector, snapshot/reset button, and mode switch into a desktop-friendly 9x4.5-inch footprint. Powered by a 9V adapter, it outputs via standard 5-pin DIN MIDI out, with six modes in V2 tailoring controls for Roland GS/XG, Creative Labs soundcards, JV-series modules, or standard CCs like 1-13 and 40-52—think filter cutoff, resonance, vibrato depth, envelope attack/release, reverb, chorus, pan, and volume. Snapshots store knob positions for instant recall, making live performance or studio automation a breeze without diving into menus.

Vintage enthusiasts love its straightforward reliability for breathing life into GS/XG rigs or software like ReBirth, though some note the fixed mappings limit full programmability compared to modern controllers.
