Korg DW-8000

KeyboardHybridPolyphonic

Back in 1985, this hybrid pioneer doubled the waveforms of its predecessor to 16, blending crisp digital samples with the warm growl of analog filters for sounds that captured the era's synth-pop magic.

Its dual digital oscillators draw from those 16 waveforms—including saw, square, sine, plus sampled hits like brass, piano, and clavinet—feeding into a resonant 24dB/octave lowpass filter and dedicated ADBSSR envelopes for filter and amp shaping. A single LFO adds modulation depth, while the built-in 12-bit digital delay (up to 512ms) delivers echo, chorus, or flanging with LFO modulation. The 61-key velocity-sensitive keyboard with polyphonic aftertouch responds expressively, controlled via a joystick for pitch bend and filter sweeps, plus a programmable data slider, numeric keypad, and buttons for editing 64 user presets. Compact at 998 x 338 x 101mm and 10.9kg, it rocks stereo outs, headphones, full MIDI, tape backup, portamento footswitch, and a versatile arpeggiator with tempo, latch, and MIDI sync.

Players cherish its fat, harmonic-rich tones and hands-on workflow, though some note the button-heavy panel lacks the tactile knobs of pure analog rigs. It's a sought-after vintage gem for layering lush pads or punchy leads.
