Korg Lambda ES50

KeyboardAnalogPolyphonic

Back in 1979, this synth pioneered full polyphony across all 48 keys using clever divide-down technology with VLSI chips, letting you play lush chords without the paraphonic limitations of many string machines of the era.

It splits into two main sections: Percussive with four voices like Electric Piano, Clavi, Piano, and Harmonics, each with dedicated lowpass filter, decay, tremolo speed, and key click; and Ensemble offering Brass, Organ, Choir, and Strings I/II, complete with attack/release envelope, vibrato, and a paraphonic brass filter. Three top-octave VCOs drive the sound, with detuning between sections for massive chorusing, plus switchable stereo BBD chorus/phase and tremolo effects. Controls are all upfront—joystick for pitch bend and chorus rate, independent volume sliders, sustain and expression pedal inputs, trigger out, and octave rockers—housed in a sturdy 824 x 497 x 127 mm wood-trimmed frame weighing 15 kg, with a flat top perfect for stacking another synth.

Players love its warm, immediate analog tones that cut through mixes, especially the Harmonics and detuned strings, though some note the fixed presets limit editing and non-velocity-sensitive keys demand expressive playing. It's a vintage gem for anyone chasing that classic ensemble vibe.
