Korg MS-10

KeyboardAnalogMonophonic

Back in 1978, this compact powerhouse helped kick off the semi-modular revolution at an affordable price, landing at just $450 and becoming a secret weapon for pioneers like Juan Atkins in the dawn of Detroit techno with its UFO-like effects and rumbling basslines.

At its heart sits a single VCO pumping out triangle, sawtooth, pulse (with variable width from square to silent), and white noise across four footages from 32' to 4', paired with a 12dB/octave low-pass filter borrowed straight from the MS-20 for that signature bite. A versatile LFO—dubbed the modulation generator—offers rate and shape controls, outputting pulse or sloped waves to tweak VCO pitch, filter cutoff, or even pulse width, while the five-stage envelope (Hold, Attack, Decay, Sustain, Release) shapes everything with precision. Hands-on patching via a 16-jack panel lets you reroute signals to the VCF, VCA, or external inputs for processing guitars or vocals, all topped by a 32-key synth-action keyboard, 20 rotary knobs on a slanted black panel, a pitch wheel, and CV/Gate/Trigger ports for modular integration.

Players love its fat, punchy bass and percussive hits that cut through mixes, plus the easy knob-per-function layout that's beginner-friendly yet deep for tweaking. The single-oscillator limit keeps things simple but focused, though it misses patch memory and needs careful recording to capture its full analog warmth—downsides turned virtues by its raw, hands-on character.
