Minilogue XD Analog / Digital Hybrid Desktop Synthesizer

Hybrid

When Korg released the minilogue XD, they took their beloved compact synth and gave it a serious upgrade by borrowing the digital multi-engine from their flagship Prologue, turning what was already a solid four-voice polysynth into something that could handle both warm analog character and cutting-edge digital sound design in the same box.

The heart of it is straightforward but powerful: two analog VCOs per voice paired with a third digital oscillator that handles FM, wavetable, noise, and variable phase modulation, all feeding into a single filter with drive and resonance controls. You get two envelope generators and an LFO per voice, plus a joystick that can be assigned to pitch, filter cutoff, LFO rate, or whatever else you want to modulate in real time. The 37-key slim keyboard is velocity sensitive, and the whole unit measures just under 20 inches wide and weighs less than six pounds, making it genuinely portable without feeling cramped. The real standout is the effects section: you can run modulation, delay, and reverb simultaneously, each with multiple algorithm choices and BPM sync on the delay, which is rare at this price point and genuinely useful for live performance.

The sequencer is a 16-step polyphonic step sequencer with motion recording that lets you automate up to four parameters per pattern, and the four voice modes—Poly, Unison, Chord, and Arp/Latch—give you flexibility beyond just playing notes. You get 500 patch slots with over 200 presets loaded, plus 16 user slots each for custom oscillators and effects if you want to dive into sound design. The OLED oscilloscope display gives you real-time visual feedback of what you're doing, and there's built-in microtuning support if you want to explore alternate tuning systems.

Since its release, the minilogue XD has earned a solid reputation among producers and live performers working in ambient, house, and melodic techno. The effects are genuinely musical rather than gimmicky, the joystick makes it expressive and fun to play, and the hybrid engine strikes a balance between the warmth of analog and the flexibility of digital without overwhelming you with options.
