Mavis Semi-Modular Analog Synthesizer

Semi-ModularAnalogMonophonic

Moog's first synthesizer to feature a wavefolder marks a significant moment for the company—it's a tool that bridges the gap between classic subtractive synthesis and the harmonic reshaping possibilities of additive sound design, all in a format that fits on your desk or into a Eurorack case.

The Mavis is built around a single all-analog voltage-controlled oscillator with continuously variable sawtooth and square waveforms, complete with pulse width modulation and independent pitch and PWM modulation controls that can be shaped by either the LFO or envelope generator. The signal flows through a classic 24dB Moog ladder filter with resonance, then into an analog VCA with switchable drone or envelope-gated modes. You get a four-stage ADSR envelope, an LFO with triangle and square wave options, and that signature wavefolder that lets you add harmonic complexity and grit to your oscillator output. The 13-key onboard keyboard includes glide and scale controls for expressive playing, while the 24 patch points give you complete control over the signal flow—you can reroute everything from the mixer and sample-and-hold circuit to the utilities section, which includes attenuators, offsets, and a DC-coupled mixer. The whole thing weighs less than a pound and measures 9 by 5.25 inches in standalone form, or you can remove it from the enclosure and mount it as a 44hp Eurorack module with 26mm depth.

Since its release, the Mavis has earned respect for delivering genuine synthesis depth in a compact, accessible package. Players appreciate how the wavefolder opens up sound design possibilities without overwhelming the interface, and the patchbay strikes a nice balance between preset normalled connections and modular flexibility. Some users note that the single oscillator and monophonic voice limit polyphonic ambitions, but that's by design—this is a focused synthesis voice, not a performance instrument trying to do everything.
