MF-102 Ring Modulator

DesktopAnalog

Designed by Bob Moog in 1998 as part of the Moogerfooger series, this analog ring modulator packs the core circuitry of vintage modular synths into a compact pedal format, delivering those iconic metallic, bell-like tones that defined experimental electronic music.

It multiplies your mono audio input—guitar, synth, voice, or anything else—with a voltage-controlled carrier oscillator spanning 2Hz to 4kHz, switchable between low (up to 130Hz) and high ranges via a rocker switch. Front-panel knobs handle drive for input gain and overdrive, frequency to tune the carrier, mix to blend dry and modulated signals, plus LFO rate (0.1-25Hz) and amount for sweeping modulation using sine or square waveforms. CV inputs let you control all parameters dynamically with expression pedals or modular gear, while status LEDs for level, LFO, and bypass make tweaking intuitive on its sturdy metal chassis with 1/4" I/O jacks and a smooth stomp switch.

Over two decades, players have praised its versatility for everything from subtle tremolo to sci-fi clangor, though some note it shines brightest with an expression pedal for real-time sweeps. A true analog gem for sound designers chasing Moog heritage.
