When Moog decided to extend the legendary Taurus bass engine into the upper registers, they created something that shouldn't have worked as well as it does. The Sirin takes a synthesizer lineage built for deep, subterranean bass and gives it the ability to sing all the way up to D8, making it genuinely versatile in ways its predecessors weren't.
This is a compact desktop unit with a brushed stainless steel chassis that feels substantial despite its modest footprint. Two modified Taurus oscillators with hard sync deliver saw and square waves across an enormous range from E0 to D8, paired with a genuine Moog ladder filter that spans 20 Hz to 20 kHz. The signal path is pure analog throughout. You get two ADSR envelopes for shaping both filter and amplitude, a multi-wave LFO that syncs to MIDI, and three flavors of glide—linear constant rate, linear constant time, and exponential—so you can dial in exactly the portamento character you want. The interface follows Moog's knob-per-function philosophy, making it intuitive to tweak in real time. On the back, there's MIDI in via both 5-pin DIN and USB, CV and gate inputs for integrating with modular gear, and a 1/4-inch audio input if you want to process external sources through the filter. Audio outputs include a 1/4-inch mono out and a 3.5mm stereo headphone jack. The 128 onboard presets let you save complex patches, and Moog provides free editor software for deeper programming from your computer.
Since its 2019 release as a limited-edition instrument celebrating the Moog House of Electronicus, the Sirin has earned respect from players who appreciate its combination of Taurus character and extended range. The main critique is the price point and the fact that panel editing is somewhat limited compared to deeper menu diving, but those who own one tend to value the straightforward workflow and the genuine Moog sound. It's handcrafted in Asheville, North Carolina, and no longer in production, which has only reinforced its appeal to synth collectors and players looking for something with real pedigree.
