Subharmonicon Semi-Modular Analog Synthesizer

Moog's Subharmonicon arrived as something genuinely different in the semi-modular world—a synth built around the mathematical relationships between tones rather than traditional oscillator stacking, creating harmonic territories that feel almost otherworldly when you start exploring them.

The sound engine centers on two voltage-controlled oscillators, each paired with two subharmonic oscillators that derive their frequencies mathematically from the parent VCO. This gives you six tonal sources that maintain a coherent harmonic relationship, spiraling through rich chord shapes that feel unified rather than chaotic. The signal path runs through a classic Moog 24dB ladder filter with self-oscillation, two attack-decay envelope generators for shaping both filter and amplitude, and a paraphonic architecture that lets you layer voices across the six oscillators. The front panel includes a resonant mixer to blend your sources, quantization controls for dialing in equal temperament or just intonation tuning, and a headphone output for monitoring.

Where the Subharmonicon really distinguishes itself is the polyrhythmic sequencer section. You get two four-step sequencers paired with four rhythm generators that output mathematical divisions of a master tempo—meaning you can layer multiple clock speeds simultaneously to create complex, evolving polyrhythms that would take forever to program on a traditional sequencer. The 32-point patchbay with 17 inputs and 15 outputs lets you patch the synth into itself or integrate it with other Eurorack gear, though you don't need to patch anything to start making sounds. The whole unit sits in 60HP Eurorack format with aluminum rails and finished wood sides, weighs just 3.5 pounds, and runs on an included wall adapter.

Since its release, the Subharmonicon has found a dedicated following among ambient producers, experimental musicians, and anyone drawn to generative or polyrhythmic composition. The learning curve is gentle for basic use, though the deeper you dig into the sequencer logic and patching possibilities, the more complex and rewarding it becomes.
