Novation A-Station

Back in 2001, this little 1U rackmount gem took the raw, hands-on vibe of Novation's legendary Bass Station and cranked it up to polyphonic paradise with 8 voices, borrowing its analog modeling smarts from the mighty SuperNova.

At its heart, three digital oscillators dish out sawtooth, triangle, sine, and PWM waveforms, plus a noise generator and basic FM engine for gritty edge—stack them in unison or sync for thick textures. A resonant lowpass filter with 12 or 24dB/oct slopes, overdrive, and dual ADSR envelopes (one for amp, one for osc) pair with two LFOs featuring sample-and-hold and MIDI sync to shape sounds that feel alive. Hands-on control comes via 25 knobs that beam MIDI CCs, a simple segment display, tab switches, rubber buttons, and mod wheel, all in a compact blue chassis with stereo outs and external audio input that routes signals through the full signal path or into the 12-band vocoder for robotic vocal tricks.

The effects suite seals the deal: distortion, stereo chorus/flanger/phaser, panning, delay, reverb, plus an arpeggiator with six patterns and adjustable gate time—everything tempo-syncable for evolving patches. With 400 patches across four banks (200 factory), it's a memory-packed workhorse that punches way above its size.

Synth heads still hunt these down for their punchy basses, soaring pads, and vocoder weirdness that hold up in modern mixes, though some note the display's basic and wish for more patch tweaks on the fly.
