Novation D-Station

RackmountDigitalPolyphonic

Back in 2002, this rackmount gem dropped as a sleek companion to Novation's A-Station bass module, packing the punch of TR-808 and TR-909 drums through clever digital Analog Sound Modeling—no mere samples, but tweakable replicas that feel alive and organic.

Its 8-voice polyphony lets you layer up to eight hits at once across 12 classic sounds like kicks, snares, claps, hats, and cymbals, with dedicated knobs for tune, decay, attack, level, and more on each for real-time fiddling just like the originals. Robust rotary encoders handle everything hands-on, transmitting MIDI CC data for automation in your sequencer, while built-in distortion, front-cut filtering, and pan add grit without external gear. Connectivity shines with stereo main outs, six assignable individual outs for precise mixing, MIDI in/out/thru, and even DIN Sync output to clock vintage Roland boxes like a TB-303 right alongside your modern setup.

Over two decades on, players still dig its authentic vibe and tactile controls for house, techno, and beyond, though some note the slim 40-patch memory as a quirk—plenty for killer kits if you save smart. If you're chasing that raw 808/909 soul in a compact module, this one's a time-tested winner.
