Novation Peak

DesktopHybridPolyphonic

When Novation set out to build the Peak, they made a deliberate choice: combine the warmth and immediacy of analog circuitry with the precision and flexibility of digital control. The result is a desktop synth that refuses to pick a side, giving you three high-resolution digital oscillators per voice running through a genuine analog filter and three separate distortion stages. It's the kind of hybrid approach that sounds better in practice than it does on paper.

Each of the eight voices gets its own multimode analog filter, three oscillators with access to 17 digital wavetables plus classic analog waveforms, and a full complement of modulation tools. You're looking at three envelopes per voice, two LFOs that can behave independently across the polyphonic texture, and a 16-slot modulation matrix that lets you route any modulation source to any destination. The front panel gives you 42 knobs for hands-on control, plus two dedicated Animate buttons for instant modulation switching during performance. Polyphonic aftertouch means expression happens at the note level, not just globally. Effects include reverb, delay with 16 sync modes, and three types of chorus, all routable through their own modulation matrix. The Peak stores 512 editable patches plus 256 factory presets, connects via MIDI, USB, and CV, and measures 233mm wide by 464mm deep.

The Peak earned respect in the community for its sound design depth and the way it balances immediacy with complexity. Some users found the learning curve steeper than expected, and the lack of a built-in keyboard means you'll need external gear to play it, but those who invested the time discovered a synth capable of everything from lush pads to aggressive FM textures. It's become something of a sleeper classic in the desktop synth world, especially valued by sound designers who appreciate the per-voice modulation architecture and the sheer number of modulation destinations available.
