Eight Voice

KeyboardAnalogPolyphonic

Back in 1977, this beast emerged as the pinnacle of Oberheim's early polyphonic dreams, stacking eight independent SEM modules into one hulking cabinet that could unleash chords with unmatched organic depth—each voice slightly detuned for that signature thick, breathing warmth no digital clone can touch.

At its core, it packs 16 analog VCOs across eight voices, each SEM delivering dual oscillators with saw, pulse, and noise waves mixed via dedicated knobs, feeding into a 2-pole state-variable filter that morphs seamlessly from low-pass to high-pass, band-pass, or notch with resonance that sings. Dual ADS envelope generators shape amp and filter responses, while a single LFO adds subtle sine modulation; controls are pure hands-on, with individual sliders and switches per module for tweaking pitch, filter cutoff, mix, and levels right on the wide front panel. Physically, it's a desktop monster—about two feet wide, wood-sided, often paired with a separate 61-note keyboard for polyphonic play, unison stacks, or even true portamento across all voices, plus optional programmer for preset storage and a built-in sequencer for rhythmic drive. Stereo outs let you pan voices for massive spatial pads.

Players still chase these rarities for their alive, variance-rich tone—vast sweeps and pads that feel handmade—though maintenance on the vintage analog hearts keeps them collector's gems rather than daily drivers.
