OB-SX

KeyboardAnalogPolyphonic

When Oberheim released the OB-SX in 1980, they solved a problem that had plagued touring musicians for years: how to get your studio sounds on the road without hauling a massive, expensive synthesizer. The answer was elegant and practical, and it became a favorite of artists like Prince who understood that limitations could spark creativity.

The OB-SX is a 49-key polyphonic analog synthesizer built around the same core sound engine as its bigger sibling, the OB-X. It features two voltage-controlled oscillators, a resonant 12dB low-pass filter, dual preset envelopes for filter and amplitude, and a single LFO for modulation. The synth comes in 4, 5, or 6-voice configurations depending on how many voice cards were installed, and it offers between 24 and 56 preset sounds depending on the production run. You get pitch and modulation paddles for real-time expression, a chord memory function for quick harmonic ideas, and CV gate connections for interfacing with modular gear or sequencers. Later units added Oberheim's proprietary digital interface for syncing with their DSX sequencer.

What makes the OB-SX special is that it trades programmability for something more valuable in a live context: instant access to carefully crafted presets and a compact footprint that doesn't sacrifice the Oberheim character. The preset-only design meant you could send your OB-X patches to the factory and have them burned into custom ROM chips, giving you a personalized instrument that weighed far less and cost significantly less than the original. Musicians have consistently praised its discrete circuitry and early CEM voice boards for delivering that distinctive warm, characterful Oberheim tone, and its ability to generate cross-modulation effects that other synths in its class couldn't touch. The main trade-off is the shorter keyboard and lack of deep editing, but for players who knew what they wanted sonically, that was never really a limitation.
