Fatman

DesktopAnalogMonophonic

PAiA built the FatMan as a kit synthesizer that lets you assemble your own analog voice from the ground up, which means you get both a functional instrument and the satisfaction of understanding exactly how it works. This approach has made it a favorite among DIY synth enthusiasts and educators for decades.

The FatMan is a compact monophonic analog synthesizer built around a dual voltage-controlled oscillator design that produces rich, warm tones characteristic of vintage analog gear. It features an 18-knob control layout alongside 3 switches, giving you hands-on access to parameters like oscillator tuning, filter cutoff, and resonance. The synthesis architecture includes a low-pass resonant filter with an ASR envelope, an ADSR voltage-controlled amplifier envelope, and a unique punch switch that adds harmonic character reminiscent of classic synth eccentricities. There's no built-in keyboard, so you'll patch it into an external MIDI controller or CV sequencer to play it. The desktop model ships as a kit for around $250, making it one of the most affordable ways to own a real analog synthesizer.

The FatMan has earned respect in the synth community for delivering genuine analog character at a price point that doesn't require a second mortgage. Builders consistently praise the quality of the sound relative to cost and the educational value of assembling it yourself, though some note that the lack of an onboard keyboard means you need additional gear to play it expressively. It remains a solid entry point for anyone serious about understanding analog synthesis without the complexity or expense of larger modular systems.
