Lifeforms SV-1b

EurorackAnalogMonophonic

Pittsburgh Modular spent years refining the original SV-1 eurorack module into something even more stable and playable, and the SV-1b represents that evolution—a synthesizer that distills the raw power of East Coast analog synthesis into a single, patchable instrument that works equally well as a standalone desktop box or as the heart of a larger modular rig.

The core of the SV-1b is its pair of analog oscillators, each capable of producing sine, triangle, saw, and square waves with full FM and hard sync modulation. The first oscillator includes Pittsburgh's distinctive blade wave, whose shifting saw-like character can be shaped via CV for sweeping, chorusing effects. A sub oscillator extends the range down two octaves, perfect for anchoring bass lines. The second oscillator is normalled to modulate the first, creating the kind of jaw-dropping analog FM textures that define the instrument's character. Both oscillators can operate well below audio rate, functioning as voltage-controlled modulation sources when needed.

The signal path flows through Pittsburgh's legendary state-variable filter, which offers separate lowpass, bandpass, and highpass outputs with resonance control that adds genuine aggression and character. A four-input mixer handles oscillator blending and external audio sources, while a voltage-controlled amplifier with an ADSR envelope shapes the overall output. The modulation section includes a digital LFO with multiple waveforms, sample-and-hold circuitry, and a built-in arpeggiator with multiple modes. MIDI integration provides velocity sensitivity, CC control, and clock sync, while 53 patch points throughout the panel invite deep sonic exploration. The desktop enclosure measures 9.75 by 5.25 inches with black powder-coated steel construction and an aluminum faceplate, weighing just 3.5 pounds and powered by a single 15V DC adapter. Six patch cables and a MIDI adapter cable are included.

Since its release, the SV-1b has earned respect from both modular enthusiasts and those seeking a complete, portable analog synthesizer without the complexity of building a full system.
