Pittsburgh Modular's approach to wave shaping has always been unconventional, and the Voltage Lab 2 takes that philosophy further than ever before with its Reflection Wavefolding and Center Clipping techniques that transform basic oscillator waveforms into textures you won't find anywhere else.
The heart of the instrument is a pair of analog oscillators with distinctly different character. Oscillator 1 features a 6-stage Warped Wavefolder that progressively distorts and reshapes your signal, while Oscillator 2 adds Pulse Symmetry control and Reflection Wavefolding, which folds the lower portion of a waveform onto the upper portion to create asymmetrical, harmonically rich timbres. Both oscillators feed into a comprehensive modulation matrix with ring modulation, frequency modulation, bit crushing, and hard sync capabilities. The two function generators are genuinely flexible, working as envelopes with or without sustain, slew processors, LFOs, clock dividers, and gate delay units that can be linked for complex modulation chains. A pair of Pittsburgh Dynamics Controllers manage both amplitude and harmonic content simultaneously, mimicking how natural sound behaves in physical space by shedding harmonics as volume decreases, which gives everything a warmer, more organic character than traditional VCAs.
The Touch Controller 2 is where performance meets deep sequencing. Two independent channels each offer 16 pressure-sensitive pads that can be assigned chromatically or to custom scales, with 8 simultaneous outputs per channel including quantized pitch, unquantized CV, pressure, trigger, gate, envelope, and MIDI. The sequencer includes arpeggiator, random generation, Euclidean patterns, swing, humanize, and probability controls per step. The whole system connects via 101 patch points, giving you the flexibility to rewire synthesis paths on the fly, and it ships with 20 Nazca Noodles patch cables to get started. The desktop chassis measures 478 x 267 x 108 mm and weighs 4.39 kg, making it substantial enough to feel serious but portable enough to move between studios.
