A compact FM synth with serious depth, the preenFM2 turns classic frequency modulation into a modern, hands-on desktop instrument. It is a 14-voice polyphonic, four-part multitimbral digital synth with six FM operators, built as an open-source, open-hardware DIY project.
Inside, it offers 28 FM algorithms, a modulation matrix, two envelopes, three LFOs, an arpeggiator, and a sequencer, plus a filter section with low-pass, high-pass, and band-pass modes. It also includes one effects slot with LP, HP, bass boost, band-pass, and crusher options, and supports up to 128 patches and 256 multipatches.
For players who like deep sound design and practical workflow, the preenFM2 is also DX7 preset compatible via sysex and can be driven over USB or 5-pin DIN MIDI. Its four-part architecture makes it easy to build layered or split setups, while its DIY nature keeps it firmly in the territory of adventurous synth users who want a lot of FM power in a small box.
