Drumboy

Drum MachineDigital

Born from a successful Kickstarter and fully open-source, Drumboy lets you hack both its hardware and firmware, turning a compact drum machine into your personal beat laboratory.

This handheld powerhouse runs on a 24-bit sample-based engine with 10 layers, each offering real-time tweaks to volume, pitch, playback direction, bit rate, start/end points, and probability for lively patterns. Dual multi-mode filters (lowpass, highpass, bandpass, bandstop) pair with parametric EQ, two effect slots (delay, chorus, flanger, phaser, compressor, expander, overdrive, distortion, bit crusher), and a dedicated reverb with size, decay, and pre-delay controls—route them per layer for deep sound design. The sequencer handles 1/64 steps over 8 bars x 8 measures, with a dynamic fill generator for instant trap rolls and glitches, plus 10 assignable LFOs across 10 banks for the eight rotary knobs. Capacitive touch pads encircle a bright 5-inch color screen (Pro Edition ups it to 5.3-inch), joined by silent tactile buttons and keys for menu navigation, all powered via USB-C with SD card storage, MIDI I/O, sync in/out, line in, and STM32 expansion.

Users love its intuitive workflow and glitchy creativity for live sets, though some note the touch interface takes a session to master and wish for built-in quantize nudges.
